CINCINNATI (WTAX. TV) - The U. S. Food and Drug Administration announced today it has approved its new non-prescription Viagra for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, which has been on the market for about a year.
The FDA also granted approval to the generic drug, which the company will be launching later this year.
The approval was for the treatment of erectile dysfunction and is not new. In fact, it's been approved more than three decades ago.
This approval came as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was reviewing whether to approve Viagra for use in people with erectile dysfunction. The drug is not currently sold under the name "Viagra."
"We've been evaluating the safety and efficacy of Viagra," said David T. Dolan, Ph. D., the FDA's chief medical officer. "We were surprised to see that the FDA had this new drug, and that it's not new."
The drug was first approved for its use in patients with low blood pressure, and it was approved for use in men with the most common side effect.
The drug was approved for use in women with a history of heart attack and stroke, and in women with a history of liver disease.
Dolan and his team analyzed data from more than 5,000 patients, which included more than 200,000 who had been treated with Viagra in the past two years.
Dr. Dolan said that in the past two years, the number of patients treated with Viagra in the U. has increased dramatically.
The FDA has approved Viagra, which is the generic name for the drug, for the treatment of erectile dysfunction and is not currently available on the market.
